Work Item Field Layouts

Overview

The fields you see when you create or open a work item follow a layout. Administrators choose which fields appear, in which sections and order, for the Create Work Item modal and the work item Detail view. Changing a layout only changes where fields appear. Values already saved on work items are not deleted.

For how administrators create and edit layouts, see Work Item Layouts.

Detail View

When you open a work item (full page or side panel), the layout controls:

  • The Description region (main content)
  • The Context region (sidebar) (people, estimates, dates, and similar fields)

These parts of the screen do not move with the layout:

  • The title bar chips: Type, Priority, and Status
  • The work item Title
  • The work item Key (breadcrumb header)
  • Sprint (top header and Sprint tab)
  • The bottom tabs, such as comments and attachments

Some fields may be grouped into sections you can expand or collapse. If a section starts collapsed, you can expand it to see the rest of the fields.

If your project uses custom fields that are not placed on the layout, they may appear in a Custom Fields section at the bottom of the Context region (sidebar).

Fields you do not have permission to edit stay read-only. Actual Start Date, Completion Date, Logged Time, and Remaining Time are always read-only.

Create Work Item

When you click Create in the top navigation, Project, Type, and Title always appear at the top of the Create Work Item modal.

The remaining fields follow the create layout for the project and type you selected. Changing Project or Type can change which fields appear below the header.

Required fields still need a value before you can save. Title is required and can be up to 140 characters.

After a Layout Change

The next time you open Create Work Item or a work item detail view, you see the new field arrangement. Saved values stay on the work item even if a field is moved or no longer shown on that screen.
